We’re excited to announce that Prestige Network has been awarded a new three-year contract to deliver British Sign Language (BSL) services to New College Swindon. This marks a significant step forward in our shared mission to create inclusive and supportive educational environments for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Here’s a closer look at what this partnership means and how it’s already making a meaningful impact.

The Partnership: From One Year to Three

In 2024, Prestige Network began working with New College Swindon, providing British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters to support Deaf and hard-of-hearing students and staff. This initial partnership aimed to ensure accessibility in lectures, workshops, and day-to-day college life.

What Was Achieved in the First Year

Over the course of the first year, our team:

  • Delivered reliable and professional interpreting services across departments
  • Supported both students and staff with on-demand communication support
  • Helped create more inclusive classroom experiences

This short-term engagement proved to be both impactful and well-received.

Evolving into a Long-Term Commitment

Following a successful tendering process, we were successful at securing, New College Swindon awarded Prestige Network a new three-year contract. This long-term agreement ensures:

  • Continuity of support for Deaf students throughout their academic journeys
  • Deeper integration of BSL services into the college’s support structure
  • A stronger foundation for expanding accessibility across the institution

Shared Vision for Inclusion

The extension of this partnership reflects a mutual commitment to:

  • Promoting equal access to education
  • Building inclusive learning environments
  • Championing the needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals at every level

This long-term collaboration marks an exciting new chapter in creating a more inclusive and accessible future for education at New College Swindon.

Going Beyond Interpreting: Deaf Awareness Training

In addition to delivering interpreting services, Prestige Network introduced Deaf Awareness Training, a vital element in creating a more inclusive college culture.

Our training sessions were designed as interactive, hands-on workshops to actively engage staff members in supporting Deaf and hard-of-hearing students better.

The sessions brought together teachers, support staff, and administrators in a practical learning environment.

What the Training Covered

Each workshop was divided into three key areas:

Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL)

  • Staff learned fingerspelling, common BSL vocabulary, and even how to sign their own names.
  • Participants described these practices as “empowering” and “a highlight of the training.”

Understanding the Needs of Deaf Students

  • The sessions explored the real-world challenges Deaf students face in educational settings.
  • Solutions were shared, including the use of visual materials, adjusting classroom layouts, and offering captioned content.
  • The aim was to help staff recognise and reduce barriers to learning.

Feedbacks

Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Here’s what they had to say:

“I’m now interested in attending more BSL courses.”
